GeoAccess Division Geomatics Canada Department of Natural Resources Canada * * * * * NATIONAL ATLAS DIGITAL DATA This directory contains 1:7.5 million scale National Atlas digital base map data for Canada. The data was produced by the GeoAccess Division, formerly the National Atlas Information Service (NAIS), of Geomatics Canada. GENERAL INFORMATION Scale: 1:7 500 000 Data Format: ESRI ArcExport (.e00) Data Type: 2D layered vector data Geographic Extent: Canada Transfer Method: ISO 9660 CD-ROM 3.5" diskette (DOS) 8 mm cassette (UNIX) Date: Information updated as of 1996-1997. Population categories determined from Statistics Canada 1991 Census data. LIABILITY The Government of Canada and the Department of Natural Resources Canada assumes NO liability for any errors or ommisions in the digital data it provides to users. SOURCE Derived from National Topographic Series maps at a scale of 1:250 000 and International Map of the World Series maps at a scale of 1:1 000 000. Other data such as transport and urban were usually taken from maps and statistical documents produced by Canadian governmental agencies. ACCURACY/PRECISION Co-ordinate Precision: +/- 500 metres Co-ordinate Accuracy: +/- 10 kilometres PROJECTION INFORMATION Projection: unprojected - Geographical coordinates (Latitude/Longitude) Introduction: The following document describes the contents of the 7.5 million, digital topographic database of the GeoAccess Division, Canada Centre for Remote Sensing. This database contains all features represented on the 7.5 million map of Canada and surrounding areas. Data are organised into layers representing related features. The accompanying tables describe each layer, the feature types and feature attributes that have been defined for each layer. Terminology: The Geographic Information System (GIS) currently used by the Division is ARC/INFO(tm). The following ARC/INFO(tm) terms have been used throughout this document: * coverages represent layers of data * item name refers to the field name describing the features. Data Layers: The following layers represent the Division's base data at the 7.5 million scale: Coverage Name Description airport Major Canadian airports bathy Contour lines representing values of equal elevation below mean sea level drain Features representing rivers and lakes elev* Contour lines representing values of equal elevation relative to mean sea level fedlimit lnternational boundaries, Canada/Greenland dividing line, or 200 mile fishing limit glacier Glaciers and icefields park National park boundaries parkpt Canadian national parks represented as a point feature on the Canada map polarice Approximate marine areas covered by permanent polar ice popplace Selection of populated places in Canada prov Limits of the Canada land mass, provincial and territorial boundaries rail Railway features road Major road features and ferry routes * This layer is currently in development. A number of coverages representing foreign areas, map extent/frame and a projection grid are also included with the Canada 7.5 million coverages. They are listed in the following table: Coverage Name Description drain_fn Rivers and lakes glac_fn Glaciers land_fn Landmass rail_fn Railway features road_fn Road features frame Defines map extent/frame grid 5 degree latitude and longitude grid _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Layer Descriptions This section describes the contents of each coverage. Each will be described in terms of its type, features and attributes.
