CANADA LAND INVENTORY LEVEL II UTM DIGITAL DATA DCW TRANSPORTATION AND PLACE NAMES 1. Coverage Specifications Original Map Scale: 1:1,000,000 Resolution : 1,600 to 7,300 feet, at 90 percent confidence level, according to DCW specifications Map Projection : Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) Datum : NAD27 Spheroid : Clarke 1866 Units of Measure : meters 2. CLI Level II UTM Digital Data Enhancements CLI Level II UTM digital data have undergone the following transformation from their original Level I representation: a) The data are projected to UTM. Note(s): i) Strict adherence to the 6-degree UTM zone convention has been made during the projection of the data to UTM, i.e.: Zone 22 - all maps East of 54 W. Longitude Zone 21 - all maps between 54 and 60 W. Longitude Zone 20 - all maps between 60 and 66 W. Longitude Zone 19 - all maps between 66 and 72 W. Longitude Zone 18 - all maps between 72 and 78 W. Longitude Zone 17 - all maps between 78 and 84 W. Longitude Zone 16 - all maps between 84 and 90 W. Longitude Zone 15 - all maps between 90 and 96 W. Longitude Zone 14 - all maps between 96 and 102 W. Longitude Zone 13 - all maps between 102 and 108 W. Longitude Zone 12 - all maps between 108 and 114 W. Longitude Zone 11 - all maps between 114 and 120 W. Longitude Zone 10 - all maps between 120 and 126 W. Longitude Zone 09 - all maps West of 126 W. Longitude DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PROCESS OR VIEW DATA ACROSS UTM ZONES. 3.1 Attribute Schema for DCW Transportation Coverage(AAT.DBF) a) Standard ArcInfo Arc Attribute Table (AAT) variables: FNODE_ Numeric 11,0 From or starting node number TNODE_ Numeric 11,0 To or ending node number LPOLY_ Numeric 11,0 Left Polygon number RPOLY_ Numeric 11,0 Right Polygon number LENGTH Numeric 13,6 Perimeter, in meters COVER_# Numeric 11,0 ArcInfo Polygon Number COVER_ID Numeric 11,0 ArcInfo User ID b) Simplified DCW Transportation Attributes LEGEND Character 25 simplified DCW text legend, as follows: Code Description ROADS All DCW road types including primary roads, secondary roads and undifferentiated roads (from the DCW Road Layer). RAILROAD All DCW Railroad types, including single track, multiple track and light- duty railroads (from the DCW Railroad Layer). TRAILS All DCW tracks, trails or footpaths (from the DCW Roads Layer). BRIDGE,CAUSEWAY or FERRY Selected DCW transportation structures, including bridges, causeways and ferry routes (from the DCW Transportation Structure Layer). CABLE or PIER Selected DCW cultural landmarks, including piers, wharfs or quays, or aerial cableways (from DCW Cultural Landmark Layer). Note(s): i) Most maps will contain roads; some will also contain railroads and trails. Few maps contain bridges (or causeways or ferry routes) or aerial cableways (or piers or wharfs or quays). No single maps contains all five feature types. ii) Due to the absence of polygon topology in this coverage, Left and Right Polygon Number in the standard ArcInfo AAT section are redundant. 3.2 Attribute Schema for DCW Populated Place Names (PAT.DBF) a) Standard ArcInfo Point Attribute Table (PAT) variables: AREA Num 13,6 Area, in square meters PERIMETER Num 13,6 Perimeter, in meters COVER_# Num 11,0 Standard ArcInfo Polygon Number COVER_ID Num 11,0 Standard ArcInfo User ID b) Simplified DCW Place Name Attributes PPPTNAME Char 40 Populated place name, or blank Note(s): i) Some names has been left blank; these never-the-less indicate the presence of a small populated place. ii) Most names are in lower-case text; major urban areas are indicated in capital letters. iii) The UTM or latitude/longitude position of the populated place is not explicitly defined in the PAT file. 4. Narrative Description of DCW Derived Coverages for CLI Selected layers from the Digital Chart of the World (DCW) were originally conceived as a cartographic enhancement to the GeoGratis Canada Land Inventory (CLI) delivery mechanism, i.e. as a cartographic enhancement to the quick-look GIF and WMF files which make part of such data delivery mechanism. While DCW data for Canada is already a public domain product, the work required for the above objective has lead to this distribution of selected layers for selected areas (the CLI area) on a 1:250,000 National Topographic Series (NTS) map basis. The DCW digital data product in it's original state is organized on a 5-degree by 5-degree basis. Selected layers have also been organized and are being distributed on a provincial basis. The only difference between this and other distribution offerings is that the selected layers are organized on an NTS map sheet basis. As part of the re-organization on a provincial basis, selected elements (features) from selected layers dealing with transportation have been combined to form a comprehensive 'transportation' layer. This transportation layer is based on Revision 4 of the DCW-VMAP data product. The simplified 'roads' layer in this distribution was compiled from Revision 4 of the DCW-VMAP data. Only the attribute schema of the DCW transportation layer has been modified (simplified) as part of the generalization; the coordinates of the road network and other transportation features have not been modified. The result is a simplified legend containing only five basic and unqualified transportation features. The populated place name were also revised but the 'placename' layer in this distribution is based on the original DCW (Edition I) digital data product. The revisions made to place names (mainly in Northern Canada) were not deemed beneficial to the CLI objective. As part of the restructuring of the DCW place names, some place names have been corrected for spelling; others have been added to ensure that most NTS sheets have at least one point of reference. In general however, the place names are the same subset found on the original DCW digital data product. The user is referred to the original DCW data product, or to the VMAP-Revision 4 public distribution product, for more details of the DCW product specification. 5.
